Why

Photos and media can disclose location through EXIF GPS, XMP location fields, QuickTime ISO-6709 metadata, and timed telemetry tracks. Buzz should remove these structures in bundled clients and reject upload bypasses at the relay without adding a server-side media toolchain.

The compliance boundary is known embedded geolocation metadata: coordinates, altitude, place/location fields, direction, and media telemetry. It does not attempt to detect location written into visible user content or concealed through steganography.

What

  • Re-encode desktop/mobile JPEG, PNG, and WebP uploads before hashing and sending; bake EXIF orientation into pixels before removing the tag
  • Normalize HEIC/HEIF to JPEG on supported client paths
  • Strip desktop FFmpeg global, stream, and chapter metadata; explicitly map one video and at most one audio stream; restrict protocols/environment; normalize odd dimensions
  • Use AVFoundation's sharing metadata filter on iOS and copy only primary A/V tracks with Android MediaMuxer without setting location
  • Add bounded structural relay validation for JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and constrained H.264/AAC MP4
  • Reject EXIF/XMP, comments/private chunks, QuickTime location boxes, metadata/subtitle/data/telemetry tracks, alternate A/V tracks, and trailing payloads
  • Add standards-compliant PUT /upload; retain PUT /media/upload as a measured media-only compatibility alias with the same media validation
  • Keep PDFs, archives, text, and opaque non-media attachments exact-byte through /upload; reject recognized audio and unsupported media with 415 until a format-specific location policy exists
  • Return 422 for malformed, residual-metadata, or non-canonical media
  • Probe actual bytes rather than trusting request MIME while preserving streaming for MP4
  • Add deterministic realistic fixtures for EXIF GPS, XMP GPS, QuickTime ISO-6709, timed telemetry, spoofed MIME, alternate tracks, audio fallthrough, orientation, and legacy-route behavior

Dependency and licensing posture

  • Relay/Linux containers: no FFmpeg, ffprobe, or ExifTool is bundled or invoked; validation is implemented in Rust, so this PR adds no media-binary distribution obligation to relay images.
  • Desktop: Buzz invokes a separately installed system FFmpeg at runtime and does not bundle or redistribute it in the app/DMG.
  • iOS/Android: media normalization uses platform AVFoundation and MediaMuxer APIs; no FFmpeg binary is included.

Validation

  • cargo test -p buzz-media — 74 passed; 1 live-MinIO test ignored
  • Rust clippy clean for buzz-media, buzz-relay, buzz-cli, and buzz-test-client
  • Desktop Tauri clippy clean; 58 focused media tests passed
  • flutter test test/shared/relay/media_upload_test.dart — 26 passed
  • just desktop-check passed (two pre-existing Biome warnings remain non-failing)
  • Media relay E2E targets compile with standard-route, compatibility-route, audio, spoofing, and format coverage
  • Full repository pre-push gates passed before push

Summary

This PR uses the preferred client-normalization plus relay-enforcement model. Clients produce metadata-free media where platform support exists; the relay probes uploaded bytes and fails closed on media it cannot prove compliant. The relay neither bundles nor invokes FFmpeg, ffprobe, or ExifTool.

Location-data boundary

Buzz removes or rejects recognized embedded location metadata: EXIF/XMP GPS coordinates, altitude, place/location fields, direction, QuickTime ISO-6709 values, and location/telemetry tracks. It does not claim to detect location represented in visible or audible user content, or through steganography.

Upload behavior

  • PUT /upload is the exact-byte non-media attachment path. It probes bytes, rather than trusting MIME type or filename, and rejects recognized image/video/audio so media cannot bypass enforcement.
  • The legacy PUT /media/upload path remains media-only, has the same validation behavior, rejects unknown files (PDFs, archives, text, and arbitrary binary), and emits buzz_media_legacy_upload_route_total.
  • Recognized unsupported formats/codecs return 415; malformed, noncanonical, or metadata-bearing media returns 422.
  • New clients use /upload first, but retry /media/upload only for 404 or 405. This preserves the rollout against relays that have not yet gained the new endpoint without masking real failures.

Relay enforcement

  • Images are structurally checked for EXIF, XMP, private chunks, comments, thumbnails, and trailing data.
  • MP4/MOV uploads permit exactly one H.264 video stream and at most one AAC audio stream; alternate tracks, subtitles, data/telemetry tracks, attachments, chapters, and location-bearing QuickTime atoms are rejected.
  • ISO-BMFF is now identified structurally from ftyp compatibility brands. This prevents a proprietary MP4 major brand from falling through as a generic byte attachment.
  • The MP4 atom walker now has a strict nesting-depth cap, preventing malicious container structure from consuming unbounded stack.
  • Audio signatures (MP3, M4A/AAC, FLAC, WAV, Ogg/Vorbis, and Opus) are recognized and rejected until a compliant client-side normalization path exists.
  • The relay buffers only a bounded probe prefix, then replays the exact stream into existing storage.

Client normalization

  • Desktop bakes EXIF orientation into pixels before metadata-free image re-encoding. Its video preprocessing maps only primary streams, strips global/stream/chapter metadata, handles odd dimensions, clears inherited environment state, disables stdin, and restricts protocols.
  • iOS uses AVFoundation's sharing metadata filter.
  • Android copies only selected audio/video tracks through MediaMuxer, without metadata/data tracks or setLocation. A dependency-free Dart fast-start rewriter then moves moov before mdat and adjusts stco/co64 offsets, producing relay-compatible Android MP4s.
  • The Android rewriter bounds MP4 structure, validates required boxes, streams copies in bounded chunks, and deletes partial output on failure.

Coverage

  • Deterministic JPEG, PNG, and WebP fixtures include real TIFF EXIF GPS IFDs and XMP latitude/longitude; tests first prove the source fixture contains those fields.
  • Coverage includes QuickTime ©xyz ISO-6709 metadata, telemetry/data tracks, alternate streams, spoofed MIME types, audio signatures, malformed and unsupported media, exact-byte non-media uploads, and legacy-route behavior.
  • New tests cover proprietary ISO-BMFF branding, excessive MP4 nesting, Android stco/co64 fast-start relocation, cleanup on malformed structure, and narrow old-relay fallback behavior in CLI, desktop, and mobile.

Tooling and licensing posture

  • The relay and production server image do not redistribute or execute FFmpeg.
  • The desktop app may invoke a separately installed FFmpeg executable; it is not packaged in the DMG.
  • iOS and Android use platform media frameworks, avoiding a newly redistributed codec dependency.

Validation

  • Ran codex review
  • Normal pre-push suite passed after merging current main: org/branch guards, desktop checks, Rust tests, desktop tests, mobile tests, and Tauri tests.
  • Focused media validation passed: buzz-media unit tests (76), relay structural-routing test, CLI/desktop fallback tests, Flutter media-upload tests (30), Flutter MP4 fast-start tests (3), flutter analyze, and Rust/Desktop clippy.
  • Latest pushed SHA: cff7ee0a0aa8662ef60bf6d5f0ec924cec89e67a.
